These cars earn highest crash-safety ratings

November 18th, 2009, 11:09 am by Matt Degen

A new batch of cars have earned the designation “Top Safety Pick” by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for 2010.

This year, the parameters to make the cut were tougher than ever because vehicles had to show good roof strength to measure protection in the event of a roll over.

The new requirement for roof strength winnowed the winners from a record 94 in 2009 to 27 this year.

Subaru was the only manufacturer with a winner in all four vehicle classes in which it competes, the IIHS said. In total, five Subarus earned the Top Safety Pick (including the Outback, above).

Subaru sales jump 41 percent in October

November 3rd, 2009, 11:11 am by Matt Degen

October sales figures are trickling in today, and among the big winners so far is Subaru.

The Japanese automaker known for its lineup of all-wheel-drive sedans, wagons and SUVs saw year-over-year sales rise a whopping 41 percent. Total sales in October were 18,169 vs. 12,917 in October of 2008, according to the Associated Press.

For year to date, sales are up 13 percent, with 176,590 vehicles sold.

Subaru’s top seller for October was the Outback, pictured above, which sold 6,451 units, more than double what it did in the year-ago period.

Last month, Motor Trend named the Outback as SUV of the year.

Sales results from Orange County dealers should be coming in soon. Stay tuned for local sales results.
