John Force Racing Museum to hold open house

November 11th, 2009, 4:42 pm by Matt Degen

The John Force Racing Museum in Yorba Linda is holding an open house Thursday and Friday to give fans an inside glimpse into the life of the Funny Car champion and team drivers such Robert Hight and Force’s daughters, Ashley, Brittany and Courtney.

The museum and will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, and the event is free. On display are race cars, trophies and hundreds of photos of Force and his team drivers. Unfortunately if you’re hoping to meet Force and Co., you’ll have to wait for another time; the teams will be at Auto Club Raceway for the qualifying rounds of the 45th Club NHRA Finals.

“This is a great chance for our fans to stop by and see some of John’s great memorabilia, winning race cars including Robert Hight’s L.A. Dodgers Mustang from last season and unbelievable photographs,” said Craig Hoelzel, manager of the facility’s Race Station shop. “We really only open the shop and museum to the general public a couple times a year. Fans can spend a couple of hours here and then head to the racetrack and see great racing action.”

The facility is located at 22722 Old Canal Road, Yorba Linda. The phone number is 714-921-1651.

CHiPs” references aside, the moves put on by 400 motorcycle officers yesterday were really impressive.

Officers from 56 agencies gathered at Huntington State Park to demonstrate their motorcycle maneuverability skills at the annual Orange County Traffic Officer Association’s Motor Rodeo.

“The officers were challenged to weave through eight different cone courses to simulate real-life scenarios, such as chasing a suspect through an apartment complex, said OCTOA executive director Reserve Deputy Steve Spernak of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department,” writes my colleague Jaimee Lynn Fletcher.

And, she reports, on occasion, officers took a spill, much to the delight of their opponents.

Millions of dollars’ worth of world-class cars sat in an equally breathtaking setting today during the annual Concours d’Elegance at the St. Regis Resort in Dana Point.

The car show, now in its 27th year and second at the Monarch Beach location, drew an estimated 330 cars and 3,000 attendees, said Bruce Junor, president of the volunteer-run event.

“It’s just fabulous,” he said while overlooking a sea of pristine metal that in turn overlooked the Pacific. “The turnout is more than we expected.”

The nonprofit show benefited the Assessment and Treatment Services Center and the Mary and Dick Allen Diabetes Center at Hoag Hospital.

Among the highlights of the event were a 1907 Panhard & Levassor towncar, a 1915 Ford Model T Depot Hack and an ultra-rare 1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt.

In addition to the vintage vehicles, dozens of exotic “super cars” also joined this year’s event, including two Bugatti Veyrons and a Lamborghini Reventon, one of only 20 made. The Concours also saw two Southern California debuts that attracted crowds throughout the day: 2010 versions of the four-door Porsche Panamera and the $455,000 Maybach 57 Zeppelin, which sat aside a pristine 1932 model.

“This is what it’s all about,” said Judi Savic, as crowds gushed over her and her husband Bob’s 1963 Porsche 356 Coupe while the Tustin couple ate a gourmet picnic they had brought, “having fun and having fun with your car.”

Concours d’Elegance rolls into Dana Point this weekend

October 1st, 2009, 12:38 pm by Matt Degen

What’s better than a hole in one on a golf course? How about when the course is overtaken by hundreds of priceless, pristine vehicles. That will be the scenario next Sunday when the 27th annual Concours d’Elegance rolls into the St. Regis Resort in Dana Point.

For the uninitiated, the event is a sight to behold, featuring extremely rare cars that, even if decades old, look as if they were brand new.

“It’s a presentation of history, art and engineering all wrapped in one,” says Bruce Junor, president of the concours. “We bring automobiles that have been enthusiastically restored to their original condition from people who have the knowledge and skill to do that. Many are hot rods, many are cars from the ’20s and ’30s and even teens.

“What you see is people who restore these things and spend the time and money and effort to do this, sometimes years. It’s the art form that goes with it. Some people say it’s just a bunch of grease monkeys, but it’s much more than that. It takes teams of people working for years to bring some of these cars to the event.”

It also takes teams of people to put on the show itself, which is expected to draw about 350 cars total. In addition to rare vehicles such as a 1941 Chrysler Thunderbolt, 1951 Delahaye and a 1955 Jaguar D-type that finished third at Le Mans that same year, car gawkers can see current supercars such as a Bugatti Veyron and Ferrari Enzo.

More good news for car lovers is that the price has been halved this year, with tickets $30 pre-sale and $35 day of. The show benefits the Assessment and Treatment Services Center and the Mary & Dick Allen Diabetes Center at Hoag Hospital. There are also limited spots left for a private collection tour on Saturday, with tickets at $150.

Barrett-Jackson auction coming to O.C. in 2010

October 1st, 2009, 6:00 am by Matt Degen

Orange County has scored an automotive coup by nabbing its very own Barrett-Jackson car auction, to be held next year late June or early July.

According to my colleague and fellow gearhead Frank Mickadeit, the three-day event will take place at the O.C. Fair &  Event Center in Costa Mesa, aka the fairgrounds.

The annual Scottsdale version of the show regularly draws 200,000 spectators, and sells millions of dollars worth of cars — from restored classics that go for hundreds of thousands to clunkers totaling just a few grand.

Astute readers of this blog may recall that earlier this year, a Villa Park couple sold the first production Ford Thunderbird (pictured above) at the Scottsdale event.

It went onto become the show’s highest-priced car at $660,000.

The auction, which goes back 50 years, also takes place in West Palm Beach, Fla., and Las Vegas, with this year’s Vegas auction running Oct. 7-10.
