Can you believe this tops list of ‘Most American’ cars?

With the 4th of July holiday as its backdrop, auto Web site Cars.com has compiled a list of the Top 10 American-Made index.

According to the company, the list “evaluates cars based on percentage (by cost) of their parts that are made domestically, where they are built and how popular they are among U.S. buyers.”

“In today’s global economy, there’s not an easy way to determine just how American a car is. Cars.com’s American-Made Index helps consumers identify the most-American vehicles based on production location, percentage of domestic-parts content, and American sales volume for each vehicle,” the company says.

So who’s #1? That goes to the Toyota Camry, pictured above, which has knocked off five-time winner Ford F-150 from first place.

In all, the Japan-based automaker captured four spots in the list, with fellow Japan-based automaker Honda taking another spot.

Toyota Camry? American made car? OK ~ the plant is in the USA but it’s Japanese engineering……I don’t get it…….but I’m all for the US of A!

Absoutely I believe it. Now that many years have passed is GM finally ready to buld a quality vehicle? They are a victim of their own circumstance.

this survey is stupid. and people who purchase cars based on american made parts is also stupid. i buy cars based on quality, reliability, and value and if this criteria doesn’t fit any amercan made cars then nobody should buy american! it’s that simple.

I have a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu 40,000 miles and a 2005 Chevrolet 2500 Duramax pickup 150,000 miles no problems at all general service only NO REPAIRS at all. 100% satisfied.

This type of accounting is long over due. Too much ” Buy America” rhetoric when so many parts are made overseas,purchased by US companies and assembled in the US, a lot of it from high wage countries like Japan that are much more efficient in production. Ford uses engines that are Made in Japan, when they used to be made in US.

While I drive Toyota vehicles, I prefer the “J” version (Made in Japan), as pride of workmanship is much greater. I had a 1993 Camry until 2007. I was the original owner - fantastic beyond belief. Prior to that, I had owned three successive Chevrolet Monte Carlos. They were nice at first, but like most GM products, when they fall apart, they do it all at once! Yet, they wonder why they have trouble! I’m sure some will relate tales like I seen here about 150,000 miles in 3 years and 40,000 in 1 year. Personally, I find that a bit hard to believe how a person could rack up that many miles unless it was a business vehicle.

i have a 2002 Ford Taurus with 198,000 miles on it. Original everything with the excetion of brakes, oil, battery, and some hoses. I love it and hope it runs another 100,000 miles.

The American factory should take great pride in their workmanship. It’s a great car and was/is the best money I ever spent.

After so many years of imports, I am going back to the GM cars, I put my eyes at the 2010 buick .

Anybody have an idea of when will pop-up in the market?

GM is still selling the same sucky cars they sold before they went bankrupt. It will take a couple years for the design and manufacture of new and improved post-reorganization cars with hopefully better craftsmanship, fit and finish and design.

Good to hear this. I have driven Toyotas and now drive a Honda. It has gotten hard to tell which cars are “American” as I recall “American” brands may be made elsewhere like a Dodge model that was made in Canada, etc. i had known that many of the Japanese co’s are now made in America.

So I just drive cars known for long time reliability. The Toyotas and now Honda have gone well over 100k and were still going when I sold them with very little maintenance. I had a 72 VW squareback which I liked but it seemed to be for the kind of person who likes to diddle with his car as there seemed to be a lot of little things that went wrong and needed fixing.

While I guess some of the GM and other American cars are made well, most reports that I had seen did not have them in the top for reliability.

And now with the govt–and us taxpayers having such a big share of GM political considerations are already a big part of things with favorable deals for the unions and not for the dealers (who also employed Americans, Oh, but they weren’t union members).

I resent that my govt has taken my money and that of other taxpayers to prop up a co that doesn’t make the kind of cars that I want to buy. If they had less benefit obligations and made more of the type of cars that people want to buy, they should do ok without govt help!
