
Just weeks after GM said it had found a buyer for its Hummer SUV brand, a report today says the deal could be in jeopardy because of the country’s policy on pollution.
The BBC is reporting that “China National Radio said Hummer is at odds with the country’s planning agency’s attempts to decrease pollution from Chinese manufacturers.”
Hummer’s surprise buyer, Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery, however, reportedly said: “The fact that it is from an article from a state media organization does not mean it is government policy.”
General Motors, which declared bankruptcy June 1, is shedding Hummer along with its Saab and Saturn brands in a bid to reduce costs. Earlier this year the Detroit automaker announced it was killing its storied Pontiac brand.
